Where did the practice of tending to the womb originate?
It is important to distinctly say, my education in womb care is recieved by the Tu’ul Ix Indigenous Arts Institute, once known as The Arvigo Institute. It is a blend of the teachings of Dr. Rosita Arvigo, Naprapath, USA, and her mentors Don Elijio Panti, Mayan medicine man, Belize, and Hortense Robinson, Traditional Midwife, Belize. The bulk of material for this practice comes passed down from Mr. Panti, and thousands of years of traditional wisdom from his indigenous blood lineage.
The way of tending to the womb is ages old, and would have been seen in many different corners of the world. Sadly, healers and midwives who cared for the womb in similar ways have been wiped out, forgotten, and witch hunted away. Their teachings lost to patriarchal, white supremacist, post-colonial societies.
I (Nora Fantry LMT) give thanks to my teachers and the indigenous practices of the Mayan Lineage, that which support me as the grounds and roots for my practice in providing womb care.
However, I opt out of calling what I do a ‘Mayan Abdominal Massage’, as I am not Mayan, nor was I taught in the traditional manner of apprenticeship that would be apart of authentic Mayan training of Sobadoria. For me to pose as such would be cultural disrespect, misappropriation and white supremacist erasure.
If you are searching for a practitioner with authentic lineage to these traditions, I can send you some references directly.
